WHAT’S THE POINT?
This article provides descriptions of two more common presentation aids (Equipment and Props, and Computerised Presentations – e.g. PowerPoint); explains the pros and cons related to their application; and uses these insights to explain general principles that are applicable to face-to-face and eLearning development.

Types of Presentation Aid covered here
In this article, we will return to some of the more commonly used visual aids in use today. We will begin by looking at equipment and props and then discuss the application of tools like PowerPoint®. For each of these aids, I have provided information on the advantages and disadvantages related to their use. I have also included insights that may give you some ideas on making best use of these for your own purposes.

Aid Type 7 – Equipment and Props

I have used the term equipment and props to cover any object that can be used to make the message more tangible. These aids can therefore include:

Equipment
I have seen equipment ranging in size from a pinhead to a full size 747 aeroplane used during presentations. You can use equipment like this for static demonstrations. Alternatively, you can use working models to help your audience gain a better understanding of the message.

WHAT’S THE POINT?
This handout explains why it is so important to use presentation aids; and describes the key principles you should apply when developing and using presentation aids.

Overview – Developing Presentation Aids

Some people will tell you that presentation aids are not required, and an audience can be persuaded by speech alone. Certainly, some speakers can pull this off. People like Sir Winston Churchill were able to influence others through wonderful orations (Even now we all remember ‘we shall fight them on the beaches…’ [and some other places that I can’t remember]). However, the rest of us need an edge, to get the same effect without being world-class orators.

The Relational template provides a very effective means for covering a wide range of topics. In fact, the elements shown in Figure 6 provide an extremely handy checklist for relating any form of content that is not already covered by the preceding four templates.

The parts of the Relational template are:

Part 1 – Whole Picture View

The first stage in this template is very important. You must begin by giving your audience:

An Overview of the Issues
Start by giving an overview of the issues that you are going to be covering. This step will assist you to program the audience, and help them to put all of the following information into the appropriate context.

An Explanation of the Relationships
As you are describing each of the issues, it is important to explain the relationships between each piece of information. You can do this either verbally, or through graphical representations (such as those shown in Figure 7).
